AOC recently launched a new line-up of computer monitors for the Philippine market, bringing in the quality products this 50 year-old Taiwan-based electronics company is known for.

If you are not familiar with AOC, the computer monitor provider was the number one brand in the Philippines in 2017, this is according to an independent report published by IDC. As the brand continue to maintain its competitive price point in the Philippine market, AOC ended up as the monitor of choice among big brands, notably AMD, which has been using AOC monitors for their big events such as e-sports.

For this gadget review, AOC graciously sent over the AOC C24G1 for us to check out. We looked at the aesthetics, features and how it performs as a gaming monitor.

Aesthetics and features

AOC has done a great job in the aesthetics department by giving this monitor a minimalist gamer-look on the back, with red stripes in different positions. The front of the monitor doesn’t scream gamer as much as there is a simple red accent on the bezel. Everywhere else is matte black plastic with the monitor using a three-side borderless slim bezel design.

The bezels measures at 0.26 inches on the top and sides and 0.85 inches on the bottom. The curved screen has a matte anti-glare screen surface and the curve itself is measured at 1500R, which is steeper compared to 1800R that is typically found in other curved monitors. This allows for more immersive visuals in gaming.

On the lower right of the monitor you will find the control buttons as well as the power button and LED.

A feature that we like the most in this monitor is that it can easily be assembled without the need for tools. Thanks to the quick-release bracket mechanism attached to the monitor stand. The stand can be released using the button beneath the attachment point with little effort. Alternatively, you can opt to use a 100 x 100mm VESA solution, if preferred.

The ports are pointed downwards, which are 2 HDMI 1.4 ports, DP 1.2a, VGA, a 3.5mm headphone jack and AC power input (internal power converter). There is also a K-Slot towards and a cable-management loop on the bottom of the stand neck.

You can also route cables nicely in the cut-out provided on the stand which is a nice touch for a gaming monitor like this one.

Color quality, AMD Freesync

There are several monitor presets available in the OSD settings that seem decent and the monitor looks fairly bright out of the box. Adjusting the settings to match with Windows 10’s monitor calibration tool is not complicated with this monitor.

The C24G1’s VA (Vertical Alignment) LCD panel was able to bring out the images quite well and made them appear quite rich. The monitor offers a decent coverage of the sRGB colour space (99%) without being to saturated in some regions.

Being a gaming specific monitor, our AMD RX 580 graphics card was able to take full advantage of the 144Hz refresh rate and FreeSync, giving out fluid visuals, which is critical for competitive gamers. The 144Hz refresh rate is available for both AMD and Nvidia GPUs but the latter won’t be able to take advantage of FreeSync.

Conclusion

Personally, we think that a 24-inch display is the sweet spot for the 1080p resolution. Packing it with a curved panel and 144Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, and AMD FreeSync makes this a good choice for competitive gamers. Though some may prefer TN panels for a more consistent response, the VA Panel is for people who are looking for a richer color quality while maintaining a low response time and higher refresh rate. The monitor’s contrast was able to bring out the deep colors quite well.

The tool-less assembly of the monitor with the quick release mechanism is very convenient as it saves time in assembly. If you are looking for a monitor with a good mixture of quality and responsiveness, the AOC C24G1’s price range makes this a good value for those looking to get a curved gaming monitor for their competitive e-sports needs.
