Bentley Systems has introduced OpenSite+, the first engineering application to leverage generative AI for civil site design. This marks a significant development in automating and optimizing the infrastructure design process. OpenSite+ is designed to improve productivity and accuracy for engineers working on residential, commercial, and industrial site projects by automating repetitive tasks like drawing production and providing advanced tools for layout optimization.

Key Features of OpenSite+:

Generative AI Design Copilot: Allows users to interact with design models and documentation through natural language, enabling real-time design revisions with precision. This AI-driven copilot streamlines site design and boosts user efficiency.

Layout Optimization: Uses AI to evaluate thousands of layout options and suggest optimal designs in real-time, significantly speeding up the decision-making process. This feature minimizes errors and rework, ultimately saving time and costs.

Automated Drawing Production: Automates mundane drawing tasks, accelerating production by up to 10 times and ensuring that annotations, labels, and dimensions meet organizational standards for clarity and aesthetics.

Smart Design Tools: Engineers can create intelligent, editable objects like building pads, parking layouts, driveways, sidewalks, and ponds. These tools reduce the time needed to complete projects, offering substantial productivity gains over traditional CAD software.

The platform is digital twin-native, built on Bentley’s iTwin platform, enabling seamless collaboration and data integration from multiple sources. The digital twin context ensures a holistic view of design work and provides a solid foundation for future AI model training while maintaining control over proprietary data.

Bentley’s Chief Product Officer, Mike Campbell, emphasized how generative AI will transform infrastructure design by optimizing workflows, enhancing productivity, and maintaining high standards of quality. Early adopters like Joe Viscuso of Pennoni have praised OpenSite+ for streamlining workflows and eliminating the need to switch between programs, speeding up project completion and delivering superior results.

With OpenSite+, Bentley continues to push the boundaries of infrastructure engineering by integrating AI into the design phase, allowing engineers to focus on higher-value tasks while automating routine operations. This new generation of Bentley’s Open Applications combines the benefits of both desktop responsiveness and cloud-based capabilities.
