For virtual assistant executive Mygie Capina, supporting her 15-year-old daughter Miyake’s journey as an internationally ranked fencer requires a delicate balance.
Miyake, who began fencing in 2017, is ranked fourth in the Philippines at the senior level, and is a member of the National Training pool and the De La Salle Zobel fencing varsity team. Key to Miyake’s success are access to quality coaching and exposure to training and competitions. The mother and daughter pair travels abroad three to four times a year for these events, including the recent Junior and Cadet World Championship in China.
Balancing her demanding career with her daughter’s rigorous training requires Mygie to stay connected at all times through digital tools like international VoIP calls, messaging apps and email. “I need to be constantly online to stay in contact with my colleagues and team,” she explains.

“It’s easier if you’re on the phone connected to international roaming instead of searching for a restaurant or coffee shop for WiFi connection,” Mygie adds.
Activating Smart’s international roaming service is a breeze, according to Mygie. “It’s easy when I’ve already subscribed to a package using the GigaRoam website. We just receive a welcome message once we land in a different country,” she states.
For those unfamiliar with the service, Mygie advises checking data usage to avoid billing surprises, particularly via the Smart App and the Giga Roam website or seeking assistance through the Smart Facebook chat.
With Smart’s international roaming service, Mygie effectively juggles her responsibilities as a business owner and a supportive parent to an internationally ranked athlete.
