PLDT and Smart Communications have rolled out an artificial intelligence (AI) training workshop to help persons with disabilities access digital tools and services, as part of their efforts to promote digital inclusion.
The workshop, launched in partnership with the Adaptive Technology for Rehabilitation, Integration, and Empowerment of the Visually Impaired (ATRIEV), was held in line with the 14th Global Accessibility Awareness Day. It featured an “AI for Accessibility” module tailored for people with visual, hearing, or speech impairments.
“Through AI, we’re creating a future where persons in challenging circumstances can participate in a digitally powered economy,” said Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP and head of stakeholder engagement at PLDT and Smart.
Participants explored apps such as ChatGPT for writing and translation, Seeing AI for object and text recognition via smartphone camera, Live Transcribe for real-time speech-to-text, and Speech Assistant AAC for converting text into speech. The workshop also demonstrated how voice-activated smart speakers can help manage tasks at home.
Trainers from the Department of Education’s special needs education program, the National Commission on Disability Affairs, and other advocacy groups attended the session. The hands-on activities were led by visually impaired instructors who shared their experiences using the tools in daily life and teaching.
“In our school, we have Deaf learners who don’t know Filipino sign language, so communication is difficult. These tools will help me teach more effectively,” said Karen Rose Sumandal, a special education teacher from Taguig.
PLDT and Smart said the initiative builds on their IDEATe (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity Advocacy through Technology) program and multi-year partnership with ATRIEV. The companies aim to reduce inequality and support persons with disabilities in accessing employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
The training also supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly on decent work, economic growth, and reduced inequalities.
