PLDT Inc. and its wireless subsidiary, Smart Communications, have partnered with MPower, Meralco’s retail electricity arm, to register 153 sites under the Energy Regulatory Commission’s Retail Aggregation Program (RAP).
The initiative covers 144 cell sites and nine facilities, with a combined power demand of over 2,500 kW across PLDT’s network. More sites in the Visayas and Mindanao are expected to follow before year-end.
“Our Group has always believed that national progress depends on two essential foundations: reliable power and strong digital connectivity,” said Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman and CEO of PLDT, Smart, and Meralco. “This collaboration reflects our continued effort to align our resources and capabilities to better serve our customers.”
The RAP enables businesses to combine multiple electricity accounts in the same franchise area to purchase power in bulk from licensed retail electricity suppliers. This setup helps reduce power costs, improve energy use control, and opens access to renewable energy.
PLDT and Smart say the move supports their network sustainability goals, including cost efficiency and reduced environmental impact. PLDT COO Butch Jimenez Jr. noted that operating a “smarter and greener network” is essential as they prepare for broader 5G and AI integration.
In 2024, the group shifted 30 network sites to 100% renewable energy, following similar geothermal energy adoption in 2023. The company has also secured P5 billion in green loans for fiber expansion while aiming to cut Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 40% by 2030.
MPower First Vice President Redel Domingo said the company is committed to supporting PLDT and Smart’s transition and the country’s broader energy shift by offering competitive and renewable energy options under RAP.
