Elon Musk’s xAI has filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI in Texas, accusing the two companies of colluding to limit competition in the artificial intelligence sector and within Apple’s App Store.

The complaint claims Apple and OpenAI “locked up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing.” Musk’s company argues Apple’s agreement with OpenAI unfairly disadvantages rivals by prioritizing ChatGPT over other AI models.

In June 2024, Apple and OpenAI announced a partnership to integrate ChatGPT into Siri and other Apple apps. Musk contends that without this exclusive deal, Apple would have had no reason to downplay his own services, including the X and Grok apps, on its platform.

The lawsuit seeks billions of dollars in damages and requests a jury trial.

Musk, who acquired his social media company X in March 2025 through a $45 billion all-stock deal, has long feuded with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Musk co-founded OpenAI but left in 2018 after disputes with Altman, later criticizing its shift from a nonprofit to a for-profit model.

Earlier this year, Musk was part of a consortium that reportedly attempted to take control of OpenAI’s governing nonprofit body with a $97.4 billion offer, which Altman rejected. Musk is also suing OpenAI and Altman in California over the company’s restructuring.
