Philippine telco giant PLDT Inc. and its wireless unit Smart Communications are expanding their barangay-based campaign against cable theft to more communities across the country, building on a program first launched in Makati City.

The initiative, led by the PLDT Group’s Asset Protection and Security Risk Governance (APSRG) Group, has already rolled out in Pangasinan, Davao, and Cebu in partnership with local governments and police. More areas are set to follow.

The campaign seeks to address persistent theft and vandalism that continue to plague PLDT’s network. In 2024 alone, the company recorded nearly 1,000 loss incidents, with copper cables accounting for 91% of the total cost of material losses. Some theft hotspots in Manila reported incidents as often as every three days.

Beyond equipment losses, such attacks disrupt services for customers, causing complaints and revenue loss. The program trains barangay officials and residents on how to report incidents through the PLDT Security Hotline 164, educates them on the Anti-Fencing Law, and raises awareness on online threats through PLDT and Smart’s campaign.

“Protecting telco infrastructure is not just about keeping the network running, it’s about enabling progress,” said PLDT Chief Operating Officer Butch G. Jimenez.

Security kits, including flashlights, batons, raincoats, reflective gear, and Smart prepaid cards, were distributed to barangay patrol units to support local monitoring efforts. Company representatives also assisted residents with service concerns during the rollout.

The effort forms part of PLDT and Smart’s broader push for digital inclusion and resilient connectivity nationwide. The company said continued investments in its network not only strengthen infrastructure but also support education, healthcare, and livelihoods in underserved areas.
