GADGETS | AirPods Pro 3: Better fit, smarter features

Apple has unveiled the AirPods Pro 3, its latest take on wireless earbuds, bringing design updates, smarter health features, and longer battery life.
The most immediate change is a redesigned fit. Apple says it studied thousands of ear scans to create a smaller body paired with five sizes of foam-infused ear tips, including a new XXS option. The result should mean better stability, especially for workouts, where the new IP57 water and sweat resistance is welcome.
Sound quality gets a boost through a new acoustic design and upgraded Adaptive EQ. Apple claims the active noise cancellation (ANC) is now up to twice as effective as the AirPods Pro 2, with improved microphones and foam tips adding to the passive seal. Transparency mode has also been refined to make outside voices sound more natural.
Battery life is another area of improvement. With ANC on, AirPods Pro 3 now last up to eight hours per charge, a notable increase over previous versions. In Transparency mode, playback stretches up to 10 hours.
Fitness is clearly a bigger focus this year. The AirPods Pro 3 introduce a built-in heart rate sensor that works with the iPhone’s Fitness app, letting users track more than 50 workout types without needing a separate wearable. For Apple Fitness+ subscribers, live metrics like heart rate and calories burned can also be viewed in real time.
Apple has also introduced Live Translation, available initially in a handful of languages, which allows for near real-time conversation translation directly through the earbuds. This makes the Pro 3 more than just an audio device, positioning it as a tool for travel and communication.
On the sustainability side, Apple highlights that the earbuds are built with recycled cobalt in the battery and recycled plastics in the case, aligning with the company’s carbon-neutrality targets for 2030.
The AirPods Pro 3 are available for preorder now and will hit stores on September 19.
