The Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) has suspended the issuance of permits for all motorsports events, aligning with government energy conservation measures following the declaration of a national energy emergency triggered by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

In an advisory dated March 25, AAP said the suspension covers all organizing permits for AAP-sanctioned motorsports events, with both pending and new applications placed on hold until further notice.

The move comes a day after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. declared a state of national energy emergency, citing risks to the country’s fuel supply as global oil markets reel from disruptions linked to escalating hostilities in the Middle East.

The conflict, which has affected key oil transit routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, has tightened global supply and driven crude prices sharply higher, raising concerns over fuel availability and inflation across import-dependent economies such as the Philippines.

AAP said its decision supports the national government’s Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (UPLIFT), a whole-of-government response aimed at stabilizing energy supply and managing consumption during the crisis.

“Recognizing that motorsports is inherently dependent on petroleum-based fuels, the AAP acknowledges its responsibility to support national energy conservation efforts and help ensure supply stability during this critical period,” the group said.

Motorsports events, which rely heavily on fuel-intensive activities, including racing, logistics, and transport operations, are among the nonessential sectors now being curtailed as part of broader demand-side management measures.

Event organizers have been advised to defer preparations requiring official AAP sanctioning while the suspension remains in effect.

The AAP said it will continue to monitor developments and issue updates once conditions allow the resumption of normal operations.

The Philippines, which imports the bulk of its oil requirements, is particularly vulnerable to global supply shocks. The ongoing crisis has already pushed up domestic fuel prices, with knock-on effects on transport costs, electricity rates, and food prices.

Government agencies have begun implementing conservation measures, including reduced energy use in public offices and discussions on flexible work arrangements, as authorities attempt to manage limited supply and cushion the economic impact.

Analysts warn that prolonged disruption in global oil flows could further strain the country’s inflation outlook and economic growth, underscoring the structural risks of heavy dependence on imported fuel.

Within this context, AAP’s suspension of motorsports permits signals how the energy emergency is cascading beyond core sectors into recreational and commercial activities, as institutions adjust operations to prioritize fuel security.
