Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd. and NEC Corporation will begin joint development in April 2026 of an artificial intelligence system designed to identify and report near-miss incidents at construction sites.

The system will use video footage and sensor data from hydraulic excavators to detect potentially hazardous situations and automatically generate incident reports, aiming to improve safety in construction operations.

The companies said the initiative addresses ongoing challenges in the construction sector, where changing site conditions, weather and complex workflows contribute to safety risks.

The platform will use an AI model trained on excavator data to extract “risk scenes” from recorded footage. These scenes will be analyzed alongside operational data using video recognition and generative artificial intelligence technologies to identify incidents and summarize events.

The system will also cross-reference detected activities with historical data on accidents, equipment failures and unsafe behavior to determine which incidents require reporting.

A proof of concept conducted in September 2025 demonstrated the system’s ability to detect near-miss scenarios and generate reports based on captured footage, the companies said.

The joint development will focus on expanding detection capabilities and improving report generation to support safety management at construction sites.

The project reflects broader efforts to apply artificial intelligence and sensor-based monitoring in industrial environments to reduce accidents and improve operational oversight.
