More than 100 personnel from PLDT Inc. and its wireless unit, Smart Communications Inc., have earned Certified Energy Manager (CEM) credentials as part of the group’s push toward greater operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.
The certification program, conducted in partnership with Meralco Power Academy, aims to support the companies’ adherence to the Department of Energy’s Circular No. DC 2023-12-0036. The directive requires designated establishments consuming at least 50,001 kilowatt-hours annually to implement an energy management system and submit periodic energy reports.
As of December 2024, PLDT and Smart had identified over 1,000 sites that meet the DOE’s energy consumption threshold. In response, the group trained its network operations and facilities management teams to manage and optimize energy use across these sites.
“With Certified Energy Managers among our teams, we aim to enhance our organizational capacity to use energy resources more efficiently and support our decarbonization roadmap,” said Benjamin Cusi, energy head at PLDT and Smart. “Our CEMs will enable us to implement smarter and data-driven practices that reduce energy consumption and contribute to our broader sustainability goals.”
Leo A. Gonzales, vice president and head of property facilities and asset resiliency management, added: “The certification process and DOE accreditation underscore our commitment to embedding energy efficiency into the core of our facilities management operations. By equipping our teams with the expertise to optimize energy use, we are driving operational efficiency and cost management while contributing to our sustainability agenda and ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory standards.”
PLDT Group aims to cut its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030, based on 2019 levels. The group is also working on transitioning to renewable energy, adopting green technologies, and expanding energy efficiency efforts to meet the country’s energy mandates and contribute to the global target of net-zero emissions by 2050.
