Journalists and communications educators in Cebu took part in a full-day workshop aimed at strengthening their skills in artificial intelligence (AI), digital safety, and newsroom resilience while underscoring the need for ethical and responsible reporting.
“This workshop aims to help address pressing concerns and challenges which community journalists face daily in their work, such as digital safety, mental wellness, as well as challenges brought forth by AI and its impact on the newsroom,” said Atty. Maria Jane Paredes of STET–Women in Cebu Media.

Journalist and media advisor Jaemark Tordecilla discussed practical uses of AI in newsrooms, including summarizing information, generating story ideas, and repurposing content. He emphasized that while AI can improve efficiency and creativity, responsible use and careful review remain critical to ensure accuracy and fairness.
Innopub Media co-founder Max Limpag provided tips on protecting data and ensuring digital security, highlighting the responsibility of journalists to safeguard trust in their reporting.
Bidlisiw Foundation Inc. Executive Director Pamela Uy also spoke on mental wellness, stressing the importance of mindfulness and self-awareness in a profession that is fast-paced and often stressful.
“We’re committed to empowering our stakeholders, and that includes the media. Hopefully, this workshop helps journalists become more resilient in the digital age,” said Roby Alampay, first vice president and head of public engagement and corporate communications at PLDT and Smart.
Organizers said the initiative also aligns with PLDT and Smart’s support for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including quality education, innovation and infrastructure, and strong institutions.
