COMMUNITY | PLDT, Smart, ADZU launch literacy apps in Chavacano, Tausug

PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications, in partnership with Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU), have launched two new literacy apps to support Chavacano and Tausug communities, aiming to preserve local languages while making learning more accessible to children.
The mobile apps, called Apprende for Chavacano and Hinduan for Tausug, were introduced with support from the Department of Education – Division of Zamboanga City. They are designed to promote literacy and numeracy in native languages while helping safeguard the country’s cultural heritage.
“The launch of Apprende and Hinduan is close to our hearts because it allows children to learn in their own mother tongue, making education more meaningful. At the same time, it helps preserve our local languages so that the next generation can continue to value and celebrate their heritage,” said Stephanie Orlino, PLDT and Smart Stakeholder Engagement head.
ADZU Grade School Principal Ellen Segurigan welcomed the initiative, calling it more than just the rollout of learning apps. “Today, we celebrate the preservation, appreciation, and joyful learning of our local languages. With these apps, students will not only gain knowledge but also discover the richness of our heritage,” Segurigan said.
The two new tools complete a suite of 13 literacy apps developed by PLDT and Smart with education partners across the country, part of the telco group’s wider efforts to promote digital inclusion and support education in underserved communities.
The initiative also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 on quality education and SDG 11 on sustainable cities and communities, by ensuring inclusive learning opportunities while preserving cultural identity.
