Sophos said its managed detection and response (MDR) business grew 39% year over year to 40,000 customers worldwide, as artificial intelligence took on a larger role in cybersecurity operations over the past 12 months.

The cybersecurity company reported that 52% of MDR cases were resolved end-to-end by AI without human intervention, while automated responses to authorized threats were completed in an average of 89 seconds from case creation. The figures were released as part of a review of the company’s security operations over the past year.

Sophos said its platform processes tens of millions of security detections daily, using AI to filter alerts, correlate signals, and identify incidents requiring action. The company said human analysts remain involved in higher-risk investigations, threat hunting, customer advisory work, and oversight of automated systems.

“The agentic SOC is the new operating model for managed security, and Sophos is defining what it looks like in production,” said Raja Patel, president of Sophos. “When you run the world’s largest SOC, every threat encountered makes every customer’s defense stronger.”

According to Sophos, its MDR service uses a combination of automated and analyst-led workflows. The company said AI manages routine and high-volume tasks, while security professionals review incidents that require additional context, business considerations, or assessment of new attack techniques.

“The 52% gets the attention, but the 48% is just as important,” said Rob Harrison, senior vice president of product management at Sophos. “When AI takes the volume off the human queue, our analysts get the bandwidth to do the work that requires their judgment.”

Sophos also outlined plans to expand AI-based capabilities across its cybersecurity portfolio through 2026. The company said upcoming initiatives include deeper integration of extended detection and response (XDR) and security information and event management (SIEM) technologies, additional AI security tools, and the launch of a security advisory offering called Sophos CISO Advantage.

The company additionally cited recent recognition from industry analyst firms and customer review platforms, including Gartner Peer Insights, G2, and KuppingerCole.

Sophos said it currently provides cybersecurity products and services to more than 600,000 organizations worldwide.
