COMMUNITY | UP Diliman hosts digital skills training for MSMEs
Participants attended discussions on content creation, social media marketing, e-commerce, and online safety aimed at helping businesses strengthen their digital presence and navigate online platforms.

Entrepreneurs and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) took part in a digital skills and cybersecurity training session during the 8th BUYanihan sa Diliman at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
The session was organized by the UP Institute for Small-Scale Industries (UP ISSI) under its Communities of Practice for Entrepreneurship (COPE) Program in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry-E-Commerce Bureau (DTI-ECB).
Participants attended discussions on content creation, social media marketing, e-commerce, and online safety aimed at helping businesses strengthen their digital presence and navigate online platforms.
DTI-ECB Trade Industry Development Specialist Arianne Villareal said the agency’s goal is to support MSMEs, which account for the majority of businesses in the country, and help promote locally made products online.
“Ang pinaka-goal talaga namin is to reach the MSMEs as they make up almost more than half of the enterprises in the Philippines. Sila yung kailangan nating i-empower kasi nasa kanila yung mga Tatak Pinoy na products,” Villareal said.
UP ISSI project coordinator Melanie Sangalang said MSMEs can benefit from greater online engagement and more effective use of social media to market their products.
Among the participants was Charlie M. Montero Jr., owner of Nueva C Calamansi and Charibelle’s Pastries in Taytay, Rizal. He said the session provided insights into how e-commerce platforms can help small businesses reach customers online.
“The session on e-commerce helped us better understand how we can introduce our products online and engage with customers through digital platforms,” Montero said.
The event also included discussions on cybersecurity awareness, covering online scams and phishing attempts that commonly target internet users and businesses.
Jessica R. Domingo, owner of online gardening supplies business Shapes of Green, said the cybersecurity session highlighted the importance of remaining cautious when responding to online messages and links.
“Kahit anong mangyari, breathe, think first, before you click,” Domingo said, recalling a previous scam experience.
The training formed part of broader efforts by government, academic, and industry stakeholders to help MSMEs build digital capabilities and adopt safer online practices as e-commerce adoption continues to grow.
