PLDT and Smart announced Aug. 20 a partnership with Microsoft to expand artificial intelligence use across their operations, building on the PLDT Group’s investment in 1,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot seats.

The partnership aims to move AI beyond experimentation and integrate it into everyday business processes, including drafting communications, summarizing meetings, analyzing information and supporting decision-making.

“Our partnership with Microsoft allows us to accelerate this transformation at scale, embedding AI into everyday processes and building new capabilities across the organization. This is about driving real impact, improving how we work, and unlocking new opportunities for innovation,” said Gilbert Gaw, first vice president and head of Information Technology and the Transformation Office at PLDT and Smart Communications Inc.

PLDT and Smart said AI is being applied across several business functions. Finance and procurement teams are using the technology for reviews and analysis, while customer-facing teams are using it to synthesize feedback and support faster responses.

AI is also being used by HR and internal teams to reduce the time spent on routine work, allowing employees to focus on customer engagement, innovation and growth, the companies said.

The partnership will also focus on longer-term AI deployment, with PLDT and Smart combining implementation with employee training, governance and measurement of business impact.

The companies said they are advancing use cases in areas including network operations, enterprise solutions and AI-driven automation.

“What stands out about the PLDT Group’s approach is that they’re focusing on real work and real outcomes. They’re embedding AI into the flow of everyday work, unlocking meaningful productivity gains while building long-term capability across the organization,” said Mayank Wadhwa, ASEAN president of Microsoft.

The next phase of the partnership will focus on expanding AI use across teams, developing more advanced applications and translating initial gains into broader business impact, PLDT and Smart said.
