COMMUNITY | PLDT, Smart extend disaster preparedness training to Green Cross
The training covered basic preparedness measures, including assembling survival and “go bags,” securing communication links during emergencies, and preparing essential tools and documents.
PLDT and Smart brought their Individual Preparedness Caravan to Green Cross Inc.’s (GCI) Makiling Plant in Calamba, Laguna, giving employees practical training on emergency response and personal disaster preparedness.
The activity formed part of the PLDT Group’s #KonektedforResilience advocacy and was facilitated by the Emergency Management Center, a longtime partner of the PLDT Group.
The training covered basic preparedness measures, including assembling survival and “go bags,” securing communication links during emergencies, and preparing essential tools and documents. Participants were also introduced to the “rule of threes” for surviving without air, water and food.
Manuel Manimtim, GCI Makiling Plant managing head for plant and operations, said the session provided lessons he could also apply at home.
“I learned a lot, primarily how to have this kit and prepare ourselves for any kind of emergency,” Manimtim said. He added that he planned to share the lessons with his family.
Edward Sanchez II, GCI Makiling Plant safety officer, said the training revisited basic preparedness practices, including using cloth to filter water.
Russel Vinuya, plant superintendent, highlighted the importance of preparing a “go bag” containing essential documents and tools.
The GCI officials said the training served as a refresher on preparedness practices that can be overlooked during routine operations. They also expressed support for extending similar sessions to other private sector organizations.
The Individual Preparedness Caravan is among the PLDT Group’s capacity-building initiatives under #KonektedforResilience, which also includes network readiness, mobile solutions and Communications as Aid.
PLDT and Smart said the program supports efforts to help communities prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters. The initiative also contributes to the PLDT Group’s support for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
