PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications Inc. are strengthening efforts to cut emissions and reduce reliance on fossil fuels as global oil prices rise and energy markets face disruption linked to unrest in the Middle East.

The companies said the move is aimed at maintaining stable telecommunications services for millions of Filipinos amid ongoing global uncertainty.

Since 2021, PLDT and Smart have been working to reduce operational emissions from fuel and electricity use by 40% by 2030, using a 2019 baseline. The program includes investments in renewable energy, energy-efficient network technologies, and workforce training to support a transition to low-carbon operations.

PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Head of Network Menardo “Butch” Jimenez Jr. said the initiatives are improving the group’s energy security and operational readiness.

“Our strategic focus on greening and modernizing our network operations has been crucial in strengthening our readiness, especially at this time of global uncertainty. We remain steadfast in delivering stable and high-quality connectivity and in ensuring that our customers remain protected and prioritized,” he said.

PLDT and Smart reported that 27 sites nationwide now run on 100% clean energy. Five facilities in the Visayas have also deployed rooftop solar systems, with additional renewable energy supply agreements under development to increase the share of clean power.

Smart has also implemented an artificial intelligence-powered “green radio” system that adjusts power consumption based on real-time network demand. The company said the system reduced energy use by more than 10,000 megawatt hours in one year.

The group has assigned more than 100 Certified Energy Managers to more than 200 facilities to improve energy efficiency while maintaining service continuity.

PLDT and Smart are also participating in the Retail Aggregation Program through MPower, allowing multiple facilities to consolidate electricity demand, access renewable energy sources, and stabilize power costs.

The companies said sustainable financing is part of their broader strategy, citing Smart’s green loan to support an energy-efficient 5G rollout.

PLDT and Smart said these efforts aim to balance emissions reduction with service reliability as energy market volatility continues.
