A U.S. jury has found Meta Platforms and YouTube liable for harms linked to the design of their social media platforms, marking a significant legal development in cases involving alleged addiction and mental health impacts.

The verdict, issued on March 25 2026 by a California state court, stems from a lawsuit filed on behalf of a young user who began using the platforms as a minor and later developed mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression and body image issues. The case focused on whether specific design features, rather than user-generated content, could be held responsible for causing harm.

Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that Meta and YouTube engineered their platforms to maximize engagement through features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay and algorithm-driven recommendations. These systems, the lawsuit claimed, removed natural stopping points and continuously delivered personalized content, encouraging prolonged use.

The complaint described these mechanisms as behavioral design tools that exploit psychological vulnerabilities, particularly among adolescents. It also cited internal research and public reports that had previously raised concerns about the effects of extended social media use on younger users.

Lawyers maintained that the platforms’ design contributed directly to compulsive usage patterns that resulted in measurable mental health harm.

Meta and YouTube denied the claims, stating that their services are intended to facilitate communication, creativity and access to information. Both companies argued that the features in question are standard tools aimed at improving user experience and that responsibility for usage ultimately lies with individuals and their guardians.

The companies also pointed to safeguards such as parental controls and content moderation systems, asserting that measures are in place to address harmful content and user behavior.

In addition, the defense referenced longstanding legal protections under U.S. law that generally shield platforms from liability related to user-generated content.

After deliberation, the jury concluded that both companies were negligent and that their platform designs contributed to the plaintiff’s harm. The court awarded approximately $6 million in damages, with the larger share assigned to Meta and the remainder to YouTube.

The decision is notable for shifting the legal focus from content moderation to platform architecture, addressing how systems are designed to influence user behavior.

The California ruling follows a separate case in New Mexico, where Meta was ordered to pay $375 million over allegations that it failed to adequately protect minors on its platforms. Together, the cases reflect increasing legal scrutiny of both platform safety measures and design practices.

Thousands of similar lawsuits are currently pending across the United States, many involving claims related to addiction, mental health effects and insufficient protections for younger users.

Legal analysts note that the recent cases may challenge the scope of Section 230 of the U.S. Communications Decency Act, which has historically provided platforms with immunity from liability for user-generated content. By focusing on design rather than content, plaintiffs have sought to establish that companies have a duty of care in how their systems are built and operated.

The verdict is expected to have implications for the broader technology sector, particularly for companies whose business models rely on user engagement. It may prompt a reassessment of features such as continuous content feeds and automated recommendations, as well as increased investment in user safety mechanisms.

Market reaction has reflected these concerns, with Meta’s shares declining following the ruling amid expectations of increased legal exposure and potential financial liabilities.

The decision is also likely to influence ongoing regulatory discussions related to online safety, algorithm transparency and protections for minors, both in the United States and in other jurisdictions.

Meta and YouTube are expected to pursue legal remedies, including possible appeals. The outcome of those proceedings may determine how broadly the ruling applies and whether similar claims can succeed in other courts.
