TOPNOTCHER VISIT (3)

A graduate of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan led the March 2026 Electronics Engineers Licensure Examination, marking a milestone for both the school and industry-academe partnerships in engineering education.

Engr. Carl Vincent Malinao, who finished summa cum laude, ranked first in the licensure exam, becoming the first topnotcher from the university’s College of Engineering. His achievement reflects a training pathway that combined academic instruction with exposure to telecommunications systems through industry collaboration.

Malinao said his early engagement with emerging technologies began during his freshman year, when he attended seminars on 5G and worked with communications equipment such as antennas and transceivers provided for laboratory use.

Faculty officials said the top ranking underscores the university’s capability to produce competitive electronics engineers. The institution has participated since 2003 in the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP), an industry-academe initiative designed to integrate practical training into engineering curricula.

SWEEP, launched more than two decades ago, provides students with access to telecommunications technologies, mentorship, and laboratory resources. Now in its fifth phase, the program incorporates artificial intelligence, automation, and intelligent systems into engineering education to align with evolving network requirements.

Industry officials said such collaborations are part of broader efforts to prepare engineers for rapidly changing digital infrastructure. Telecommunications networks increasingly require professionals capable of working across complex, software-driven systems, including next-generation connectivity platforms.

Malinao’s visit to the Makati headquarters of PLDT and its wireless unit Smart Communications highlights the link between academic training and industry deployment, from early exposure to telecommunications concepts to potential involvement in network development.

The March 2026 board exam results come as demand grows for engineers with skills in AI-enabled and automated network systems, reflecting shifts in both telecommunications infrastructure and engineering education.
