FINTECH | Visa cardholders in PH can now use Apple Pay
Apple Pay allows users to make contactless payments by double-clicking the side button on an iPhone or Apple Watch, authenticating through Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode, and holding the device near a compatible payment terminal.
Eligible Visa debit and credit cardholders in the Philippines can now use Apple Pay for in-store, in-app and online purchases, expanding contactless payment options for consumers and travelers.
Visa announced the availability on Aug. 4, allowing eligible cards to be added to Apple Pay on iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac.
The service allows users to make contactless payments by double-clicking the side button on an iPhone or Apple Watch, authenticating through Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode, and holding the device near a compatible payment terminal.
Apple Pay can be used at grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, coffee shops, retail stores and other establishments that accept contactless payments. Users can also make purchases through apps and websites using an iPhone, iPad or Mac without repeatedly entering card, contact and billing information.
Visa said the launch also expands payment options for Filipinos traveling abroad and visitors to the Philippines. The company cited its 2023 Global Travel Intentions Study, which found that 97% of Asia-Pacific travelers planned to bring credit, debit or prepaid cards on their trips, while 17% intended to bring foreign currency. Among travelers, 38% preferred cards because of security and fraud protection features, while 20% cited wide acceptance.
“Apple Pay represents the next evolution of payments in the Philippines, combining ease of use, simplicity, and security in every transaction, helping amplify the payment experience for Visa cardholders in the Philippines,” said Jeffrey Navarro, country manager for Visa Philippines.
“With Apple Pay, Filipinos and tourists alike now have seamless and secure ways to pay across shops, restaurants, travel destinations, and public transport, supporting the nation’s vision to become a cash-lite economy,” Navarro said.
For security, Visa said actual card numbers are not stored on the device or on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and stored in the device’s Secure Element.
To add an eligible Visa card, users can open the Wallet app on an iPhone, tap the plus sign and follow the setup instructions. Visa said customers will continue to receive the rewards and benefits associated with their cards.
