TECH NEWS | Synology expands ActiveProtect backup platform

Organizations can now protect and recover workloads across more computing environments with the release of Synology’s ActiveProtect Manager 2.0, which expands platform support and adds cross-platform recovery capabilities.

Synology launched ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 (APM 2.0) for its ActiveProtect data protection appliances in Manila. The update adds support for Amazon EC2, Azure VM, Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV and Google Workspace.

The software also allows workloads to be backed up and restored across different environments, supporting disaster recovery and workload migration.

“Managing fragmented backup infrastructure drives up costs and slows recovery. The ActiveProtect appliance unites purpose-built storage with powerful data management software into a single, predictable investment,” said Jia-Yu Liu, Executive Vice President of the Synology Data Protection Group.

“APM 2.0 builds on that value, enabling organizations to safeguard their entire hybrid infrastructure through one centralized, scalable solution,” Liu said.

ActiveProtect Vault now supports a wider range of Synology NAS models, while Azure Blob Storage has been added as a supported copy and tiering destination.

Backups stored in Amazon S3 Storage or Azure Blob Storage can also be restored directly to Amazon EC2 or Azure VM. Synology said this cloud disaster recovery capability can reduce recovery times by eliminating the need to route the backups through on-premises hardware.

APM 2.0 also adds software-based storage encryption at the volume level to protect data at rest. According to Synology, backup data and system configurations remain inaccessible if drives are stolen or hardware is lost.

The company said its upcoming ActiveProtect Manager 2.1 update will add AI and machine learning-based anomaly detection. The system will track backup versions for changes in change rates, file modifications, mass deletions and entropy to identify potentially suspicious backup copies.

Suspicious copies will be moved to quarantine for administrators to investigate. The system will also use the outcomes of those investigations to improve its detection accuracy and reduce false positives.

APM 2.1 will add malware scanning before restoration using integrated third-party antivirus software, including Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender and ESET.

If malware is detected in the most recent backup, the planned Auto Fallback feature will restore the latest clean version instead.
