BUSINESS TECH | Alibaba Cloud named Gartner leader in AI models, cloud platforms

Alibaba Cloud was named a Leader in two 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant reports, covering generative AI model providers and strategic cloud platform services, according to an announcement dated Sept. 18.

The company was recognized in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Generative AI Model Providers and the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Strategic Cloud Platform Services. It was also named a Leader in Gartner’s inaugural Magic Quadrant for Cloud AI Infrastructure in July.

Alibaba Cloud Chief Technology Officer and President of International Business Dr. Feifei Li said the company’s approach combines its Qwen model family with cloud infrastructure designed to support enterprise AI deployments.

“The generative AI model market is at an inflection point, where enterprises need not just powerful models but a full-stack AI cloud ecosystem that makes AI accessible, affordable, and trustworthy at scale,” Li said.

Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen portfolio includes open-weight and commercial models. Its latest release cited in the announcement, Qwen3.8-Flash, is a multimodal Mixture-of-Experts model with 125 billion parameters and 6 billion activated parameters per token.

The company said it has open-sourced more than 460 models, which have generated more than 300,000 derivative models and more than 3 billion downloads globally.

Alibaba Cloud operates 106 availability zones across 31 regions, according to the company. Its cloud platform strategy combines infrastructure, foundation models and applications, while its Apsara Stack supports deployment of cloud capabilities in private environments and across core, edge and on-premises locations.

Gartner estimates that the global generative AI model market reached $13 billion in 2025, including $11.4 billion from first-party foundation models. The research firm projects the overall market to reach $139.2 billion by 2030.
