COMMUNITY | PLDT, Smart empower farmers and MSMEs with AI, cybersecurity training
A highlight of the summit was PLDT and Smart’s session, “AI 101 for Pinoy MSMEs,” which introduced participants to fundamental AI concepts and tools.
In an effort to connect farmers, MSMEs, and students to advanced tech skills, PLDT and Smart Communications Inc. joined forces with Gawad Kalinga for the 2024 BayanAnihan Summit, a national gathering that highlighted the potential of technology in transforming local agriculture. This year’s summit drew young agricultural stakeholders from across the Philippines to Dasmariñas City, Iloilo City, and Cagayan de Oro City, where they shared knowledge, networked with industry players, and explored the impact of AI and cybersecurity on their work.
A highlight of the summit was PLDT and Smart’s session, “AI 101 for Pinoy MSMEs,” which introduced participants to fundamental AI concepts and tools, illustrating practical applications to support farming, entrepreneurship, and community development. The module also offered insights on digital safety, covering essential tips to help participants stay secure online and be #CyberSmart.
“We want to encourage our youth to explore and participate in agriculture by demonstrating how technology, especially AI, can revolutionize the sector,” explained Stephanie V. Orlino, PLDT and Smart’s Stakeholder Management Head. Orlino emphasized that digital skills could empower young people to engage in agriculture and strengthen the agricultural value chain, turning tasks like content creation and marketing into manageable, efficient processes. Through programs like Digital Farmers Program, Orlino added, PLDT and Smart are showcasing AI as a tool that combines creativity with business-savvy techniques.
The event also featured a countryside fair celebrating local agri-businesses and plenary discussions on the future of farming. With AI skills in hand, young farmers and entrepreneurs gained new perspectives on how digital tools can be leveraged to overcome persistent challenges in agriculture, including marketing and customer outreach.
Marione Gueta, a farm manager from Layuan Nature Integrated Farm in Bulan, Sorsogon, noted that the skills gained during the AI 101 session are immediately valuable to his work. “I’m very particular on content creation or social media content creation, because apart from marketing our own products, we also help other MSMEs in our community,” he shared. Like many MSME owners, Gueta sees visibility as a critical factor in expanding his reach and securing new customers—skills that AI-based content tools can significantly enhance.
Programs like eBizNovation and FarmSmart, spearheaded by PLDT and Smart, continue to bring these digital capabilities to communities across the Philippines. These initiatives support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), underscoring PLDT and Smart’s commitment to uplifting lives through digital empowerment.
