TELECOM | Messenger call quality improves in Philippines after network optimization
The improvements follow technical adjustments made on Smart’s live network, particularly in Luzon, aimed at reducing delays and disruptions in real-time communications.

Millions of users in the Philippines are experiencing clearer and more reliable voice and video calls after a network optimization effort involving Smart Communications, Ericsson and Meta.
The improvements follow technical adjustments made on Smart’s live network, particularly in Luzon, aimed at reducing delays and disruptions in real-time communications. The initiative resulted in measurable gains in call performance across Messenger and other calling applications.
Round-trip time, a key indicator of call responsiveness, dropped by 24.6%, while packet loss fell by 55%, reducing interruptions during calls. Video quality also improved, with bitrate increasing by nearly 20%, enabling clearer video streams.
The enhancements were achieved through fine-tuning network parameters, allowing more stable connections during voice and video sessions. The improvements extend beyond Messenger, with benefits observed across multiple communication platforms operating on the same network infrastructure.
Debbie M. Hu, head of network at Smart Communications, said the initiative supports efforts to improve service quality for users. “These improvements mean their video calls over Messenger are sharper, and they can enjoy continuous calls with their loved ones,” she said.
Daniel Ode, head of Singapore, Philippines and Brunei at Ericsson, said the collaboration highlights the role of coordinated technical efforts in improving user experience. “This initiative demonstrates how focused global technical expertise, decades of trusted telco leadership, and platform-level coordination can come together to produce tangible, customer-facing improvements,” he said.
The companies said the project reflects ongoing efforts to enhance network performance and support increasing demand for real-time digital communication in the country.
