Telecommunications companies have launched a joint campaign to strengthen the protection of network infrastructure and curb cable theft and vandalism through closer coordination with local governments.

PLDT, through its Asset Protection & Security Risk Governance (APSRG) Group, launched Oplan Balikatan with members of the National Telecommunications Security Council (NTSC), an industry alliance composed of security professionals from major telecommunications providers.

The initiative expands PLDT’s existing Bayanihan campaign by encouraging stronger cooperation between telecommunications companies and barangays to help safeguard network facilities and improve community vigilance against cable theft and vandalism.

The pilot activity was held in Barangay Upper Bicutan, Taguig City, where representatives from PLDT, Smart, Globe Telecom, DITO, Converge ICT Solutions, and barangay officials discussed measures to address threats to telecommunications infrastructure.

“Keeping our communities safe and connected is an effort that needs all of us. By standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our colleagues from other telcos and our partners from the local government, we can embody the true spirit of Balikatan, and empower our respective communities as well,” said Col. Wilfredo Gonio, head of PLDT and Smart’s Security Central Command & Administration Center under APSRG.

The NTSC was established in June 2021 to promote industry-wide cooperation in protecting telecommunications infrastructure nationwide.

During the pilot session, the council also donated Barangay iProtect equipment to local authorities for patrol operations, including reflectorized vests, security batons, handcuffs, and other items.

“Across the industry, we may be competitors, but when it comes to securing our networks, we share a common responsibility. Through NTSC, we are working as one to deter illegal activities and ensure reliable service for the communities we all serve,” said NTSC Chairman Gen. Ramiro Manuel Rey (Ret.) of Converge ICT Solutions.

According to the group, the initiative aims to improve coordination among telecommunications providers, local governments, and communities to help ensure the uninterrupted delivery of connectivity and digital services while reducing incidents of infrastructure theft and vandalism.
