Rakuten Viber has partnered with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT-powered features directly into its messaging app, allowing users in the Philippines to access artificial intelligence tools without leaving the platform.

The new features are now available for Viber users on iOS and Android, with desktop support expected to follow. Most of the AI-powered tools can be used without creating a ChatGPT account, although users must sign in or create a free account to access the Image Remix feature.

Among the new capabilities is a dedicated ChatGPT chat within Viber, where users can ask questions, draft messages, brainstorm ideas, and complete other tasks. Users can also mention “@ChatGPT” in private and group conversations to receive AI-generated responses that are clearly labeled within the chat.

Viber has also introduced Image Remix, which lets users edit and transform photos using ChatGPT image-generation technology. The feature includes preset templates for creating stylized images.

Other additions include Link Summary, which generates summaries of shared articles, blog posts, and documents, and Chat Summary, which privately summarizes unread conversations to help users catch up on group discussions.

The app also adds AI-assisted writing and translation tools. Polish Messages rewrites text for tone and clarity before it is sent, while Translate Message converts messages into other languages directly within chats.

Users can access the new features by updating Viber to the latest version.

“We want to make everyday communication easier and more creative,” said Ofir Eyal, CEO of Rakuten Viber. “Partnering with OpenAI means we can bring ChatGPT to our users in the Philippines to add real, day-to-day value—even if they would never have sought it out on their own. Whether you’re drafting the perfect message, remixing an image, or just exploring a new idea, this is now built into the app people already use every day.”

Torben Severson, vice president and head of global business development at OpenAI, said messaging platforms are a natural place for AI assistance.

“Messaging is where so much of everyday life happens. With ChatGPT in Viber, people can get helpful, creative support right in the moment, from finding the right words to catching up on busy chats or remixing a photo. We’re excited to partner with Rakuten Viber to bring these tools into an app people already use every day,” Severson said.

Rakuten Viber said the partnership is part of its broader effort to integrate AI into its messaging platform and supports the Rakuten Group’s “Triple 20” initiative to improve services through artificial intelligence.
