TECH NEWS | Open AI Alliance launches initiative for AI cybersecurity

A coalition of technology companies, cybersecurity firms, research organizations, and open source organizations has launched the Open Secure AI Alliance, an initiative that aims to strengthen artificial intelligence safety and cybersecurity through open technologies.
The alliance includes NVIDIA, Microsoft, IBM, Red Hat, Cisco, Dell Technologies, Cloudflare, Hugging Face, Salesforce, SAP, Nokia, GitHub, the Linux Foundation, and dozens of other founding partners. Members will collaborate on developing open AI models, security tools, and frameworks designed to improve the protection of AI systems and software.
The group said open source software has long served as a foundation for cloud computing, financial services, manufacturing, telecommunications, government systems, and internet infrastructure. It argued that cybersecurity has been one of the primary beneficiaries of open source development and that AI security should follow the same collaborative approach.
According to the alliance, both proprietary and open AI models have roles in cybersecurity. However, it said open models provide defenders with greater transparency, flexibility, and control by allowing organizations to inspect, modify, and deploy AI systems within their own environments when responding to cyber threats.
The alliance cited a recent security incident involving Hugging Face, where the company used an open-weight AI model running on its own infrastructure to analyze more than 17,000 actions during an intrusion investigation after closed AI tools were unable to support the required forensic analysis. It said the incident demonstrated the value of open AI systems for cyber defense.
Founding members are contributing technologies across the AI security stack. NVIDIA is providing open models, model weights, datasets, and its NVIDIA Labs Object-Oriented Agent (NOOA) research framework. Other contributions include HPE’s SPIFFE/SPIRE zero-trust identity framework, Hugging Face’s Safetensors model format, IBM and Red Hat’s Lightwell software supply chain security project, Microsoft’s MDASH multi-model scanning framework, and SpaceXAI’s open source Grok Build AI coding agent.
The alliance also urged policymakers to recognize open AI models, security tools, and evaluation frameworks as defensive assets rather than liabilities. It warned that broad restrictions on open frontier AI systems could reduce cybersecurity resilience by concentrating defensive capabilities among a small number of proprietary providers. Instead, it called on governments and industry to invest in shared AI defense infrastructure, including datasets, attack simulators, red-teaming tools, and evaluation frameworks.
