COMMUNITY | Metro Cebu cities adopt AI program for public services
Officials from the three cities also completed training designed to help identify practical applications of AI in government work and strengthen their technical capabilities.
Three local government units in Metro Cebu have joined an artificial intelligence (AI) program aimed at helping improve public service delivery through digital tools, training and mentorship.
Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu City and Talisay City received AI-in-a-Box (AIAB) packages under an initiative of PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications Inc. to support the use of AI in local government operations. The program provides participating local government units with a laptop, smartphone, Smart connectivity device and access to AI tools, including ChatGPT, along with training and mentoring.
During a turnover ceremony at Cebu City Hall, Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival accepted the AIAB package from PLDT and Smart representatives Roby Alampay, first vice president and head of Public Engagement and Corporate Communications, and Stephanie V. Orlino, assistant vice president and head of Stakeholder Engagement.

“As one of the four pioneer participant cities in the country, Cebu City proudly represents the entire Visayas region in a mentorship and acceleration program,” the company said. The program aims to help local government offices develop AI-based solutions for public services.
“We at PLDT and Smart believe that technology should help enhance the delivery of public service. Through the AI-in-a-Box Program, we affirm our commitment in assisting LGUs level up service delivery through a more citizen-focused, practical, secure, and innovative technology,” Alampay said.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Archival said Cebu City’s selection as one of the program’s pioneer participants and the only representative from the Visayas would help the city strengthen its use of AI to improve public services.
