BANKING | Metrobank adds anti-fraud features to digital banking app
Metrobank has rolled out four security features on its mobile banking app designed to give customers more control over their accounts and help prevent unauthorized transactions.
Philippine banks are adding security measures as scams targeting digital banking users become more sophisticated, with social engineering attacks accounting for 76% of reported cyber fraud losses in 2025, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).
Metrobank has rolled out four security features on its mobile banking app designed to give customers more control over their accounts and help prevent unauthorized transactions.
The features are a 24-hour Cooling-Off Period, Money Lock, Geolocation checks and Payee Verification.
The Cooling-Off Period is automatically activated when critical security settings, such as a password or registered device, are changed. Transactions through the app are disabled for 24 hours, giving customers time to detect and report unauthorized changes before funds can be transferred.
Money Lock allows customers to immediately lock part or all of their available balance through the app. Locked funds cannot be transferred or used for transactions, including scheduled transactions, until the customer unlocks them.
Metrobank advises customers to maintain enough available funds for upcoming or scheduled transactions before locking their money.
The bank has also added Geolocation checks to assess whether a transaction is being initiated from the customer’s registered mobile device and its location. Unusual or inconsistent activity can be flagged as suspicious to help prevent unauthorized transactions.
Payee Verification is intended to reduce errors when transferring money to another Metrobank account. Before a transfer is completed, the app displays a masked version of the recipient’s registered account name, allowing customers to verify the recipient before proceeding.
Metrobank said the security enhancements support broader government efforts to combat financial scams under the Anti-Financial Account Scamming Act and amendments under BSP Circular No. 1213.
Customers can access the features by updating to the latest version of the Metrobank App.
