TELECOM | Smart gets GSMA certification for SIM, device swap APIs
The SIM Swap API allows businesses to check for recent SIM swap activity, while the Device Swap API can identify whether a SIM card has been transferred to another physical device.
Smart Communications Inc. has secured GSMA certification for its SIM Swap and Device Swap application programming interfaces (APIs), adding network-based identity verification capabilities to its enterprise security services.
The certifications enable SmartSafe NetIdentity, a solution under PLDT Enterprise’s SmartSafe suite designed to help businesses identify recent changes involving a customer’s SIM card or mobile device.
The SIM Swap API allows businesses to check for recent SIM swap activity, while the Device Swap API can identify whether a SIM card has been transferred to another physical device. Smart said these network signals can help businesses identify potential account takeovers or unauthorized activity and determine whether additional verification is needed for higher-risk transactions.
The certifications build on Smart’s earlier GSMA certifications for its Number Verification and RoamStatus APIs. Smart is also the first Philippine telco with a GSMA Open Gateway-certified Number Verification API with Silent Authentication, according to the company.
Smart said the APIs can be used by industries including banking and fintech, e-commerce, gaming and digital entertainment, where account security and customer authentication are critical to digital transactions.
Benedict Patrick V. Alcoseba of Enterprise Core Business Management & Innovation at PLDT Enterprise said the service is intended to strengthen security without adding unnecessary steps for users.
“Digital trust is built in the small moments customers experience every day — when they log in, make a payment, or access a service without worry,” Alcoseba said. “With SmartSafe NetIdentity, we are helping businesses strengthen protection behind these everyday interactions, using globally certified network APIs that support safer authentication without adding unnecessary friction for users.”
The GSMA Open Gateway framework enables telecommunications operators to expose network capabilities through standardized APIs for use by developers and enterprises.
Julian Gorman, head of Asia Pacific at GSMA, said the certification supports the use of standardized network APIs for digital identity and customer protection.
“GSMA Open Gateway APIs help create safer, more trusted digital ecosystems by enabling enterprises to adopt secure, standards-based approaches to digital identity and customer protection,” Gorman said. “SMART’s certification demonstrates its commitment to delivering trusted, standards-compliant API services for enterprises.”
SmartSafe NetIdentity is part of PLDT Enterprise’s SmartSafe suite, which the company launched in November 2025 as a telco-enabled fraud management API suite for Philippine enterprises.
The company said the latest certifications give businesses additional network-based signals for assessing risk as more customer transactions move online.
