TECH NEWS | NU researcher develops AI-assisted CCTV system for school security
The prototype uses multi-frame verification rather than relying on a single image and is designed to process faces over longer distances and in low-light conditions.

A researcher has developed a working prototype that uses artificial intelligence and existing closed-circuit television (CCTV) infrastructure to assist schools with security monitoring, incident documentation and digital evidence preservation.
Herminiño C. Lagunzad, a faculty member in Information Technology and research coordinator of the School of Engineering and Technology at National University Fairview, developed the AI-Assisted School Security and Multi-CCTV Face Identification System while affiliated with NU’s School of Engineering and Technology. Lagunzad said the project was independently developed.
The system is designed to monitor multiple CCTV cameras simultaneously and provide AI-assisted face identification and verification. It can flag individuals whose identities cannot be matched with an authorized reference database, while also monitoring restricted areas and detecting activity outside designated hours.
The prototype uses multi-frame verification rather than relying on a single image and is designed to process faces over longer distances and in low-light conditions, according to Lagunzad.
When an incident is detected, the system can automatically capture screenshots, record video and log the event for potential digital evidence preservation. Security personnel can also manually activate panic or security events.
Lagunzad said monitoring can continue even when facial identification is unsuccessful.
The system does not attempt to predict criminal behavior or automatically classify a person as a security threat. An “UNKNOWN” classification means only that the system could not establish a verified identity match against the authorized reference database, according to the researcher.
The prototype is intended to supplement rather than replace security guards, teachers, administrators, emergency procedures and existing school-safety protocols.
The project was recently featured by Newsbytes.PH in a report published Sept. 1 titled “NU researcher develops AI-assisted multi-CCTV security system for schools.”
Lagunzad said the system could also be used to support rapid incident detection and documentation in situations involving people who already have legitimate access to a school campus.
The researcher said the project could provide a Philippine perspective on the use of artificial intelligence and computer vision with existing CCTV systems for campus security.
Lagunzad is offering demonstrations of the working prototype, along with system architecture, photos and videos, technical information on its AI and computer-vision components, and discussions on privacy, data protection, biometric information, false matches and human-review safeguards.
