GADGETS | Emirates A380 returns with Starlink Wi-Fi
The new system uses three Starlink antennas per aircraft, significantly increasing onboard bandwidth compared with earlier connectivity systems.

Emirates has begun deploying Starlink satellite internet on its Airbus A380 fleet, marking the first installation of the service on the world’s largest passenger aircraft, the airline said.
The first A380 equipped with Starlink returned to Dubai this week after installation and certification in Newquay, United Kingdom. The rollout is part of Emirates’ broader upgrade program for its long-haul fleet.
The new system uses three Starlink antennas per aircraft, significantly increasing onboard bandwidth compared with earlier connectivity systems. Emirates said the upgrade enables passengers to stream, browse, work, and play games during flights at cruising altitude.
The airline plans to offer the service free across all cabin classes, with access available through passengers’ personal devices. Future updates include live TV streaming, initially on personal devices and later on seatback screens.
The A380 presents technical challenges due to its double-deck structure and high passenger capacity. Emirates said the Starlink configuration is designed to handle these demands, delivering more than 2 Gbps of total bandwidth across the aircraft. Additional wireless access points and optimized inter-deck connectivity are intended to maintain consistent speeds throughout the cabin.
Emirates has already equipped 25 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with Starlink, with more than 650,000 passengers having used the service to date. Installation work for the A380 fleet will expand through 2026, with upgrades to be carried out at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai.
The connectivity upgrade is part of a wider modernization program. Emirates said 93 aircraft have undergone refurbishment, including the addition of Premium Economy cabins, updated Business Class seats, refreshed First Class suites, and upgraded inflight entertainment systems offering more than 6,500 channels.
The airline also continues to invest in crew training, including an $8 million hospitality training center opened in 2025 to support its cabin crew operations.
