GADGETS | Apple enters foldable market with iPhone Duo
The foldable iPhone Duo has a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with zero shutter lag, 24MP default capture and an integrated 2x optical-quality telephoto option.
Apple has introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, with a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer screen, dual-battery architecture and the A20 Pro chip.
The iPhone Duo measures as the thinnest iPhone when unfolded, according to Apple, and uses a Grade 5 titanium frame, a 3D-printed hinge cover, a Ceramic Shield back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. Apple says the front glass has three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation. The device also carries an IP68 rating.
Both displays use Super Retina XDR technology with ProMotion, Always On and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. The inner display measures 7.6 inches, while the outer display measures 5.4 inches and provides about 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. Both displays use the same aspect ratio.
The hinge contains more than 100 components, while the display assembly combines multiple durability layers, including a high-strength glass layer, polymer cover and titanium plate. The polymer cover is rated for up to 40% higher stiffness than other industry materials, according to Apple.
The iPhone Duo has a 48MP Fusion Main camera with 2x optical-quality telephoto and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. It also includes a Center Stage front camera and Camera Control. Apple says users can take selfies using the rear cameras and use Duo Preview for framing shots with another person.
Video recording supports 4K at 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision on the main camera. Other features include post-capture Cinematic effects at up to 60 fps, Audio Mix and 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse.
The phone runs iOS 27 with features optimized for the foldable form factor, including split view, multitasking, two app windows and StandBy on either display. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI are also supported. Touch ID is integrated into the side button, while Apple Watch can be used to unlock the device. Later support for Apple Pencil USB-C is also planned.
The A20 Pro chip uses a 2-nanometer process and has a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says it delivers up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, while the GPU is up to 40% faster and more power efficient. The chip also has 50% more unified memory bandwidth.
The iPhone Duo uses a custom vapor chamber and advanced thermal management. Its dual high-energy batteries provide up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display. A 50% charge takes about 20 minutes with wired charging and about 30 minutes wirelessly.
The device supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread through Apple’s N1 wireless chip, while the C2 modem provides cellular connectivity. The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only worldwide.
The iPhone Duo will be available in star white and night sky. Preorders start Oct. 16, with availability beginning Oct. 23.
Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, adding a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, the first aperture control on an iPhone. The camera has six laser-cut blades and four aperture settings, with automatic adjustment or manual control through the Camera app.
The Pro models use the A20 Pro chip, an expanded vapor chamber and Apple’s N1 wireless chip and C2 modem. Apple says the new thermal system can provide up to 40% higher sustained performance. Battery life is rated at up to 36 hours of video playback for the iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours for the Pro Max.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max come in black, silver, glacier and burgundy. Preorders begin Sept. 12, with availability starting Sept. 18.
