Google unveiled a broad set of Android and Gemini-powered updates during “The Android Show: I/O Edition 2026,” expanding AI automation, mobile security, creator tools, and cross-device connectivity across phones, laptops, cars, and browsers.
At the center of the announcement is “Gemini Intelligence,” a new AI layer designed to make Android devices more proactive by automating tasks, understanding context, and assisting users across apps and services. Google said the feature will begin rolling out this summer on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel smartphones before expanding to watches, cars, glasses, and laptops later this year.
Google said Gemini Intelligence can automate multi-step actions inside apps, including booking reservations, organizing shopping lists, and filling out forms using contextual information from connected Google services. The system can also interpret on-screen content and images to trigger tasks without manually switching between apps.
The company also introduced “Rambler,” a Gemini-powered speech-to-text feature designed to convert natural speech into cleaner written text while supporting multilingual conversations in a single message.
Google expands Gemini into Chrome, laptops
Google is integrating Gemini deeper into Chrome on Android through a browsing assistant capable of summarizing webpages, answering questions, and performing contextual tasks such as adding calendar events or retrieving information from Gmail.
Chrome’s new “auto browse” feature will also automate repetitive online tasks such as reserving parking slots or updating recurring online orders. Google said these features will launch on select Android 12 devices in the United States beginning late June.
Alongside Android updates, Google previewed “Googlebook,” a new laptop category built around Gemini Intelligence. The company described the devices as successors to Chromebooks, combining Android integration, AI-powered workflows, and Google Play applications.
Googlebook introduces “Magic Pointer,” a cursor-based AI interaction system that offers contextual actions based on screen content. It also includes “Create your Widget,” allowing users to build custom widgets using natural language prompts.
Google said Googlebooks will support direct interaction with Android phone apps and files without downloads or emulation. Hardware partners include Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Devices are expected later this year.
Android 17 adds creator, privacy, anti-scam features
Android 17 introduces new creator-focused tools, including “Screen Reactions,” which allows users to record themselves and their screen simultaneously for reaction-style videos. Google is also expanding Instagram integrations on Android devices with Ultra HDR support, video stabilization, and Night Sight features.
The company said Adobe Premiere will arrive on Android this summer, while the new APV (Advanced Professional Video) format will debut on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and vivo X300 Ultra.
On the security side, Google announced expanded anti-scam protections in Android 17, including verified banking calls that can automatically terminate spoofed financial scam calls. Initial rollout partners include Revolut, Itaú, and Nubank.
Android 17 also adds enhanced Live Threat Detection, stronger theft protection, temporary precise location sharing, contact pickers with limited access, and new safeguards for AI-powered features.
Google said Android’s AI features are being built around three principles: explicit user control, comprehensive data protection, and operational transparency.
Cars, file sharing, digital wellness updates
Google is also bringing Gemini deeper into Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in. Upcoming features include immersive 3D Google Maps navigation, in-car Gemini assistance, video streaming support, and Dolby Atmos audio in supported vehicles.
The company said Gemini in Android Auto will eventually handle contextual tasks such as replying to messages or ordering food while driving.
Google also announced wider compatibility for Quick Share, allowing Android users to transfer files more easily across Android and iOS devices through QR codes and expanded partner support.
For digital wellness, Google introduced “Pause Point,” a feature that inserts a 10-second pause before opening distracting apps, encouraging users to reflect before continuing to scroll.
The company additionally previewed a new set of 3D emoji called “Noto 3D,” which will roll out first on Pixel devices later this year.
