TELECOM | Smart boosts coverage in La Trinidad
Smart recently signed an agreement with the La Trinidad local government to build additional network infrastructure in strategic areas of the municipality.
Smart Communications Inc. is expanding its mobile network in La Trinidad, Benguet, through additional infrastructure intended to improve connectivity in the municipality, a commercial and agricultural center in the Cordillera region.

“Additional sites will help improve our coverage in La Trinidad and provide residents with more reliable service,” said Debbie M. Hu, Smart first vice president for Network Build and Implementation.
Hu said the network expansion was also intended to support broader access to connectivity.
“As our chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan says, we have to make sure that all Filipinos have access to fast and reliable connectivity,” she said.
La Trinidad Mayor Roderick Awingan said improved connectivity could benefit residents, businesses and students.
“These improvements will help our constituents stay better connected,” Awingan said. “Our students can access information more easily, our business owners can transact more efficiently, and our people can stay connected and get the information they need.”
La Trinidad serves as a trading center for agricultural products from Benguet and nearby areas. The Cordillera Administrative Region supplies about 70% of the country’s temperate vegetables, according to Smart, while Benguet is a major producer of highland crops including cabbage and potatoes.
The municipality’s wholesale trading posts attract vegetable growers from across Benguet and nearby areas, with produce distributed to markets as far north as Batanes and as far south as Mindanao, the company said.
La Trinidad is also home to the main campus of Benguet State University. Its Teacher Education program has been designated a Center of Excellence by the Commission on Higher Education, while its Agriculture and Nutrition and Dietetics programs have been identified as Centers of Development.
Smart said stronger connectivity could support businesses in using digital payment, communication and marketing tools, while providing students with access to online classes, learning resources and communication platforms.
The company also cited its recognition from Ookla for the Best Mobile Video Experience in the Philippines as part of its broader network performance efforts.
Smart said the La Trinidad expansion forms part of its continuing investment in network infrastructure and supports the government’s digitalization efforts. It also contributes to the PLDT Group’s efforts toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure.
