COMMUNITY | PLDT, Smart bring AI tools to Baguio smart city push
Called “AI-in-a-Box,” the initiative provides local government units with AI tools, connectivity, devices, and mentorship to help develop AI-driven public services.
PLDT and Smart have launched an artificial intelligence initiative in Baguio City aimed at supporting the city’s smart city and digitalization programs.
Called “AI-in-a-Box,” the initiative provides local government units with AI tools, connectivity, devices, and mentorship to help develop AI-driven public services.
The program was rolled out in partnership with Microsoft Philippines, Lenovo Philippines, and the PLDT Smart Foundation. The package for the Baguio City government includes a laptop, smartphone, connectivity device, and premium access to AI platforms.
Roby Alampay, PLDT and Smart first vice president and head of public engagement, said the initiative aims to expand access to AI technologies at the community level.
Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the partnership supports the city’s long-term “Baguio 2047” development vision focused on digital transformation, sustainability, and inclusive public services.
As part of the initiative, Microsoft introduced its Copilot AI platform to assist local government teams in administrative and operational tasks. Microsoft Philippines Country General Manager Jonathan Que said AI can help local governments improve decision-making and service delivery.
Lenovo Philippines also provided hardware support for the program, including the laptop bundled in the AI kit. Lenovo Philippines President and General Manager Michael Ngan said access to technology can help local governments develop practical solutions for communities.
PLDT and Smart said Baguio City joins Cebu City and Lanao del Sur among local government units supported under the initiative. The program is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
