BUSINESS TECH | Oracle, AWS expand database partnership as adoption grows

Oracle and Amazon Web Services (AWS) expanded their long-term strategic collaboration Aug. 14 in Singapore to accelerate customer migration to Oracle AI Database@AWS, which is now available in 22 AWS Regions.

The agreement was announced alongside the general availability of Oracle Exadata Database Service on Exascale Infrastructure on Oracle AI Database@AWS. The service is designed to bring Exadata performance and pay-per-use economics to Oracle database workloads of different sizes.

Under the expanded agreement, Oracle and AWS will continue investing in Oracle AI Database@AWS and work to accelerate customer migration and adoption. The platform allows enterprises to run Oracle database workloads alongside AWS analytics and AI services.

“Just one year after general availability, Oracle AI Database@AWS has reached global scale, with customers running business-critical workloads, and 22 AWS Regions available across Asia Pacific, Europe, and the Americas,” said Nathan Thomas, senior vice president of product management at Oracle.

“This momentum demonstrates that enterprises want a simpler, lower-cost path to modernize their most important Oracle workloads within AWS environments,” Thomas said. “With the global reach and innovative new services we have made available over the last year, we are delivering that path and enabling more and more customers to put AI to work on live business data and build new applications without re-architecting or compromising performance.”

The Exascale Infrastructure service lets customers specify the compute and storage capacity they need while spreading databases across pooled storage servers. Oracle said this eliminates the need to provision dedicated database and storage servers and makes Exadata economics practical for a wider range of workloads.

The service also supports instant thin cloning, allowing customers to create database copies for development and testing without duplicating storage.

Oracle AI Database@AWS supports generative and agentic AI workloads, while Oracle AI Vector Search allows customers to find and retrieve information based on meaning and context.

“The enterprise adoption over the past year reflects the value customers get when their Oracle AI Database workloads run on Oracle AI Database@AWS,” said Ganapathy (G2) Krishnamoorthy, vice president of database services at AWS.

“With the full breadth of AWS analytics and AI services, available right where their data lives, customers of any size can modernize applications faster, unlock new insights, and build AI-powered applications on the data that runs their business,” Krishnamoorthy said.

Among the organizations using Oracle AI Database@AWS are Korean retailer CJ Olive Young, music publisher Kobalt Music Group and the Metropolitan Transport Authority of Barcelona.

CJ Olive Young is using the platform to migrate core workloads to the cloud and integrate data across Oracle and AWS. The company said the integration with AWS services such as Amazon Bedrock is expected to support its AI initiatives.

Kobalt Music Group is using Oracle AI Database@AWS for its digital collection platform, which processes online and offline music consumption data and distributes royalties to songwriters, publishers and rights holders. The company runs Oracle Exadata Database Service on Dedicated Infrastructure in AWS.

The Metropolitan Transport Authority of Barcelona is using the platform for mobility data, advanced analytics and AI applications. The agency manages the integrated public transportation network of the Barcelona Metropolitan Region, which records 1.2 million annual ticket validations.

Oracle also cited expanded capabilities delivered during the past year. These include the general availability of Oracle Autonomous AI Database Serverless, application-to-database latency as low as 165 microseconds, integration with AWS services including Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Quick and Amazon SageMaker, and zero-ETL integration with Amazon Redshift.

The platform also supports Oracle-managed backups to Amazon S3, monitoring through Amazon CloudWatch, event-driven applications through Amazon EventBridge and Platinum Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture for mission-critical workloads.

Oracle AI Database@AWS is now available in 22 AWS Regions across Asia Pacific, Europe and the Americas.
