BANKING | BPI adds Google Pay for Debit Mastercard holders
Customers can enroll by opening Google Wallet, selecting “Add a card” and “Payment card,” then scanning their BPI Debit Mastercard or entering its details manually.
The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has made Google Pay available to its Debit Mastercard holders using NFC-enabled Android devices, giving customers another option for contactless payments.
The service, rolled out April 15, allows BPI Debit Mastercard holders to add their cards to Google Wallet and use their Android devices to make payments at contactless terminals, as well as through participating mobile apps and websites.
Customers can enroll by opening Google Wallet, selecting “Add a card” and “Payment card,” then scanning their BPI Debit Mastercard or entering its details manually. They must accept the applicable terms and verify the card through a one-time password (OTP) sent by SMS.
BPI said transactions are protected by multiple security measures and that actual card details are not shared with merchants.
Maria Cristina “Ginbee” Go, BPI head of Consumer Banking, said the service is intended to give Android users another way to make everyday payments.
“We want our customers to experience the ultimate blend of convenience and modern lifestyle freedom,” Go said. “By linking their BPI Debit Mastercard to Google Wallet, our millions of Android users can turn their phones into a secure, all-in-one payment tool. It’s about making everyday purchases simpler, faster, and seamlessly integrated into your routine, backed by the trusted security of BPI.”
Google Pay can be used at stores with contactless payment terminals, in mobile applications that support the service and on websites that offer Google Pay at checkout.
BPI also reminded customers not to share OTPs, personal identification numbers, passwords, card verification values or other account credentials with anyone, including individuals claiming to represent the bank.
The bank said its representatives will not ask customers for such information.
The Google Pay option adds to BPI’s existing payment methods, including physical cards and QR payments through the BPI app.
